Quick Details
The Minn Kota Ultrex continues to be the trolling motor of choice for professional freshwater anglers; for good reason. It has the responsive pedal feel of a cable-steer motor combined with the latest GPS auto-navigation, integrated sonar and networking functionality. When you integrate all of this technology into the rock solid chassis of the Fortrex, there's a reason why the Ultrex 80 is one of the favorite trolling motors for serious fishermen.
Most Ultrex owners such as bass fishermen primarily use their foot pedal in order to have precise control around shorelines and other structures. The multifunction foot pedal includes buttons for popular features such as Spot lock and Auto-pilot all with an easy tap of the foot. When not using the foot pedal, use the key-fob style Micro Remote which is now standard with all Ultrex motors.
Minn Kota's "Advanced GPS" technology (previously i-Pilot/i-Pilot Link) provides more auto-navigation features such as "Drift Mode" and "Dodge" which can be enabled using the foot pedal or Micro Remote. Tap into Minn Kota's One Boat Network to control your motor, enable GPS auto-navigation and mapping features from select Humminbird fish finders or the updated smartphone app.
The Ultrex 80 also comes standard with Humminbird's latest Dual Spectrum CHIRP sonar (DSC) which provides a wider range of frequencies producing more detailed returns of fish than the previous US2 sonar. With a compatible Humminbird, you can opt for integrated MEGA Down imaging which provides incredibly detailed down-scan. Humminbird's amazing MEGA Live transducer and Target Lock mount can be mounted directly to the Ultrex for unobstructed live scan sonar in all directions.
Standard features include: Power cable steering, multifunction foot pedal, Micro Remote, Lift Assist, Advanced GPS, Lift Assist, Digital Maximizer, Stow/Deploy Cable, Composite Shaft, Weedless Wedge 2 Prop, Bluetooth, Smartphone App, and a Three Year Warranty. A Humminbird Helix transducer adapter cable and ethernet adapter cable for Minn Kota's One Boat Network integration with select Humminbird fish finders are also included. Ultrex 80 Full Details
Recommended for:
Medium to large freshwater, bass boats, v-hull, pontoon, jon boats and general fishing boats up to 20'. The 80 lbs thrust motor is recommended for boats weighing up to 4,000lbs. For more help picking the right thrust level - or to learn how much your boat weighs - please refer to our guide on Selecting the Right Trolling Motor Thrust.
How It's Unique
The Minn Kota Ultrex trolling motor is the Porsche of foot control motors - there is no substitute - and is a big step up from the classic, cable-steer Fortrex. The Ultrex offers Minn Kota's revolutionary Power Cable Steer which provides the feel and responsiveness of a cable steer motor in addition to GPS auto-navigation functions such as Spot Lock and Auto-Pilot. The Ultrex comes standard with Minn Kota's latestAdvanced GPS" technology, Lift Assist, Micro Remote, integrated One Boat Networking with select Humminbird fish finders, Dual Spectrum CHIRP Sonar. Take your foot off the pedal and "Steering Lock" keeps the motor on the same heading. The Ultrex is available in 80 or 112 lbs thrust. We still recommend the Fortrex trolling motor for fishermen who are looking for a top-shelf cable steer motor but have no need for GPS technology features. The Fortrex is available in 80 and 112 lb thrust levels.

Mounting Details:
This motor is bolted directly to the bow of the boat using the included mounting hardware, and requires drilling into the boat for installation. Ideally, it's best to have access to the underside of the mounting platform in order to secure and fasten the bolting hardware. However, if accessing the underside is impossible you can use no access bolts to secure the motor from the top. For more information download Ultrex 80 installation instructions. Recommended Quick Release Brackets: For models with a 45" shaft select the Minn Kota MKA-61. For models with 52" and 60" shaft lengths select the MKA-62 bracket.
Motor Mount Dimensions:
26 11/16" x 6 1/16" (45" shaft) OR 30 7/16" x 6 1/16" (52"/60" shaft)
Mounting Plate and Motor Dimensions:
Motor Voltage and Batteries:
The Ultrex 80 is a 24 volt motor and requires two (2), 12-volt marine batteries or (1) 24v LiFePO4 lithium battery (min 50AH rating). For more information on the proper batteries to purchase for your trolling motor, see our Trolling Motor Battery Selection Guide.
Motor Wiring Details:
The Ultrex 80 can be wired directly to the batteries or it can be used in conjunction with a trolling motor power plug and receptacle for a cleaner, more professional looking installation. If using a quick release bracket, a plug and receptacle will also allow you to easily plug and unplug the motor from the batteries for easy removal and re-mounting.
To protect your Ultrex from control board damage installing a 60amp circuit breaker is highly recommended.
Shielded, marine grade wiring should be used to connect the motor to the power source (aka batteries!). To determine the appropriate gauge wiring download this circuit breaker and wiring table.
If using 2 - 12v, lead acid or AGM batteries, they must be wired "in series" to create the proper voltage for this 24v motor. For instructions on how to properly wire 12v batteries in series, take a look at our 24v-36v trolling motor wiring diagram.

Motor Run Time:
Important Note: Calculating run time is very difficult due to the many factors involved. As you likely won't be running your trolling motor 100% of the time, the actual amount of on-the-water time will be longer than continuous run times listed below. Trolling motor run time can vary depending on the boat, operating conditions (winds, waves, etc) and the type of battery used. Listed below are run-time estimates assuming a 100 amp hour rated battery. To learn more, please see our article on Calculating Trolling Motor Run Time.
- 20+ Hours: At slow, trolling speeds that draw 5 amps or less
- 3.6 Hours: Approx. run time with throttle 50% open
- 1.8 Hours: Approx. run time with the motor at full throttle
Stow and Deploy Method:
Ultrex motors feature a nitrogen charged gas spring that makes it incredibly easy to stow and deploy your trolling motor. This design is very similar to the lift-assist system on many vehicle tailgates and makes stowing and deploying the motor much easier.
Motor Steering Method:
The motor is steered via the the Ultrex Power Cable Steer Foot Pedal, the compact Advanced GPS Micro remote and Minn Kota's One Boat Network smartphone app. If networked with a compatible Humminbird fishfinder, you can also control all motor functions as well as additional auto-navigation and mapping features.
NOTE: The Ultrex Micro Remote offers basic controls, Spot Lock, Auto-Pilot, Jog and High-Speed Overpass. To access all Advanced GPS functions, a full size Advanced GPS Remote is available for purchase. As mentioned above, full functionality is also available with the One Boat Network smartphone app or a compatible Humminbird.
Shaft Adjustment:
An adjustable depth collar makes it easy to set how deep the shaft and propeller sit in the water.

All Ultrex motors have a variable speed motor.
